Open Question: Brown Summer Program for High School Students?

I just received a brochure from Brown University in Rhode Island and was wondering several things (I'm a Sophmore):
Is it worth traveling to the University, all the way from Hawaii?
Is there any selectivity to the distribution of these brochures?
Would attendance look good on my application later on for College?

Open Question: Any recommendations for Honeymoon in Mexico, not big hotels, not Cancun, preferably a small romantic cute spa?

I really don't want MayanPalace, Barceló style of Hotels, not crowded places, not full of tourists. With a lot of privacy, those little places that are not in the brochures of travel agencies. Thanks
mmm yes thank you spa is what we want.

Open Question: Am I being paranoid? I had a fierce verbal exchange with the president of our condo board six weeks...?

ago, Then my wife and I started receiving a TORRENTIAL FLOOD of travel brochures, magazines, packages etc exactly 6 days after that angry meeting -- so much so that the post office warned us that we should do something about it(which is understandable on the post office's part). I talked with my attorney about it, saying that I believed the President of the board had started this; giving our name, address and email to hundreds of travel resorts, golf clubs, spas, etc. We are elderly and before the flood of mailings we hadn't received any travel junk mail in over fifteen years.

Yet our attorney says I am just being "paranoid" and that if the board president wanted to hassle us there were "a lot better ways to do it." But it seems to me reasonable to suspect the board president of starting this flood of mail.

But am I being paranoid?? Any opinions?? (the flood of mail has now dwindled to a minimal amount-- at least for now)

P.S. Again, I don't need suggestions on how to stop this mail as it's already very nearly ceased -- I want to hear opinions on whether I'm being "paranoid" in suspecting the board president

thanks all

Open Question: has anybody read "The Hobbit"??? please(:?

Are you familiar with the book "The Hobbit" ?
For English class, i need to create a porject based on the book.
here are the guidelines.

Travel Brochure
-Create a travel brochure for middle earth using the various settings in the novel. your pamphlet should be formatted like a brochure and should include
---five settings, or places to visit
---illustrations
---a description of each setting (minimum of ten sentences) explaining the kinds of things visitors can expect to see or experience there and why that setting is important to the novel.

please help me. i've been very overwhelmed and did not have time to read the book. i have a small background of what happened from reading sparknotes.

thanks to everyone who answered&helped(:

please don't answer if you're response is offending or not pertaining to the question. i will report you :P

Open Question: A relative of mine is complaining that a neighbor of his is harassing him by flooding his mailbox with..?

unwanted ..travel packets, brochures, travel emails etc. However I think he's just being paranoid. But in fairness I'll give the facts: first, admittedly he is receiving a peculiarly large number of travel junk.

Second, the flood of travel junk started about 5 days after a condo board meeting where he got into a furious argument with this neighbor.

But I also received travel junk (thought not in that quantity). Second it seems to me that if you want to harass someone there are a lot better ways to do it. That's why I think he's just being paranoid.

P.S. his main concern is with postal mail, not the email

Any opinions on this? Thanks
The answers so far do offer helpful info -- but so far no one has answered my main question: Is he being PARANOID about this flood of postal mail? (He's obviously disturbed by it so I don't think tell him not to let it 'get to him' is helpful.)

Open Question: Will you tell me what you think of my short story?

it's for a creative writing contest, and I want to win 1st place to make up for other events I haven't participated in. It's a work in progress, so I'm not completely done writing. I just want some quick feedback to let me know if the story is capable of being 1st place material so I could finish it up and hand it in to my teacher.

The story can't exceed 1200 words, so I have about 2 more journal entries I open to write. It's supposed to be in relation to Hawaii and the writer (me). The point is to trigger emotions and make the judges somehow 'relate' to the story. The purpose of my story is to let the reader realize that too many expectations can hurt you, and experiencing different lifestyles/cultures is an opportune advantage in maturing.

My character is a 16 year old high school student, who is going to spend his summer break in hawaii without his family, friends, and with a local host family.

February 13, 2010

It was weird because it all seemed to be so real. The dream, i mean. The one I had last night, where i was a Menehune, standing in a pit of poi, whilst spying on the Hawaiian Santa, who was eating shaved ice under a grass hut at Waikiki. I guess all of those brochures of Hawaii I’ve been reading about for the past few weeks have collectively meshed into one condensed Hawaiian dream in my subconscious mind.

I’m really excited to be going to Hawaii, but not because of the gorgeous beaches or lax nature, but because I’ll be traveling there as an individual, without my parents or friends. I’ll be staying with a host family that will guide me through Oahu during the summer. I want to walk through the maze at Dole, watch Hula dances and fire breathers, see Diamond Head, surf some waves, and taste some globby purple poi (which looks like a dessert, but maybe they eat it the war I eat mashed potatoes. Or perhaps it’s like wasabi or ketchup).

Maybe I’ve got too many expectations. All I really know about Hawaii is from Lost, Blue Crush, Lilo & Stitch, and my little collection of brochures of course. And Hawaii apparently has some sort of language different than American English. I don’t remember exactly what that girl from Kauai (of which I met on the train last year) said, but I hope whatever language they speak there is comprehensible. I also heard that Oahu looks more like here, or the mainland than the other islands, so I guess my hopes of living in a grass shack next to the beach are over. What else did that girl say? I think it was something about racial discrimination? I’m not certain about it, but if there is racial tension, I hope my host family will accept me as I am.

Anticipating this trip is really working my nerves, so before I get too excited about this two-week trip that’s still a lengthy four months away, I’ll focus on school for a while before writing my next entry.

Julio-Esequiel

May 25, 2010

I’ve got about a month left here, before I leave for my trip. I had the opportunity to chat with my host family on the phone for a few minutes, and they seem like ordinary people. I was on their speaker, while both parents talked to me while my host brother was in the background listening and (loudly) whispering side comments about the way I talk to my host sister. They’re kind and funny, and are willing to help me get the best out of my experience there. I hope I don’t disappoint their thoughts of me as an ambassador of the the mainland, California specifically, because they have met up to my expectations of a host family already.

I didn’t really learn much about Hawaii during our short chat. We were just introducing ourselves with small talk.

Today I learned how much expectations can kick you in the ****. Before I left Cali, I anticipated a smooth ride on the plane, safe landing, and to find my family waiting for me as soon as I stepped out of the plane. After friendly greetings and receiving leis (like on TV) my family would then drive me to their home to get me accommodated with a nice afternoon reserved for relaxation from the plane ride. This is not what happened.

After my flight with the lady who complained about how unhygienic the headphones provided in the backseats are, and how the toilet has no water, and how the pillows are so hard, and how the blankets are too small, and how I was simultaneously listening to her with an earplug in one ear, I arrived at the Honolulu International Airport and nearly hopped off the place.

I saw leis being given to others, and I looked at many faces that weren’t looking at me. My family was no where in sight.

Open Question: How do you rate Contiki?

Over the next few years I am planning on doing a lot of travelling and i'm trying to do thorough research of who to go with to get best value for money, best experience etc for a 20 year old.
I've recently got a whole heap of travel brochures in the mail and I was wondering if anybody has been on a Contiki Tour and if so, where did you go and how did you like it? Or do you have any other suggestions of a great tour company that is not over priced?

Open Question: What is the name of this particular island in the us virgin islands?

Alright, so this is kind of confusing me. In EVERY travel brochure, there is a picture of these brightly colored pastel row houses with deep green, perfectly manicured lawns and red clay roof tiles. I think it might be St. George but i'm not positive.
I actually don't think St. George is an island, but idk

Open Question: Virgin holidays false advertising made me book a holiday?

Hi there,

I am looking for peoples opinions on this matter.

I booked a holiday through Thomson with Virgin holidays to go to Florida for 14 nights in March 2010 for my birthday.

My girlfriend & I were going to cancel this holiday and visit Australia at the end of 2010 but we had a USA brochure from when we booked the holiday to Florida and having looked through this brochure we saw an excursion to Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles which said, "The NEW Universal VIP Experience - Be among the select few to gain ultimate access to the world of film-making with your own exclusive 6-hour tour of closed locations of sets such as Wisteria Lane and CSI. The VIP Experience also includes front-of-line access to all shows and attractions, and reserved seating for shows." so we decided rather than canceling the holiday we decided to change it to visit West Coast USA, it cost us £25 each to change the booking and also brought the holiday cost up considerably but felt it would be worth it as we are huge fans of CSI.

We changed the holiday from 14 nights in Orlando to 7 nights in Los Angeles, 4 nights in San Francisco & 4 nights in Las Vegas (We booked Los Angeles to visit CSI and as the other destinations are only a short flight away we thought we may as well try these also). Approx cost was £2500+ for the holiday but as we booked the hotel in Los Angeles direct there is another £1000 on top.

I contacted the VIP Experience manager at Universal Studios Hollywood and was stunned when they informed me NO tour allows access to the CSI set, she told me even though CSI is filmed at Universal Studios, they rent the stage out to the competitor network so they have no way of allowing guests access to the set as they have no control over it.

I contacted Virgin Holidays as I was very angry as we only booked this holiday to visit CSI - Virgin claimed you could visit CSI, I explained what I had been told by the VIP Experience manager at Universal Studios Hollywood and they emailed me back claiming they would  remove all advertisings stating you can visit CSI and update all their advisors about this and as a "goodwill gesture" they would offer us transfers in San Francisco and Los Angeles (we had already paid for transfers in San Francisco) or 7 nights car hire, I emailed back and refused this.

I have now found this advertisement in three different editions of Virgin's USA brochure. I called a few times after this and the agents I spoke with still claimed they could allow us access to the CSI set and tried to sell me this product.

The Universal Studios Hollywood VIP manager  suggested I ask Virgin Holidays for the name of their contact at Universal Studios Hollywood who Virgin claim told them guests could visit the set of CSI as no-one at Universal Studios Hollywood know you cannot visit the set of CSI. Virgin would not provide me with this information and said due to DPA I cannot discuss my holiday with them (even though I had been before) and I would have to get Thomson to contact them to get this information and discuss my holiday - Thomson called them but told me I could visit CSI and tried to sell me it. (Even though Customer Relations at Virgin said they would update all their staff and confirmed I couldn't visit CSI).

I called again and the man I spoke with told me "...sets such as Wisteria Lane and CSI." meant it wasn't actually those sets you get to visit, it was sets of shows with a similar concept of these mentioned. I questioned how much money we would loose if we cancelled the holiday now but he said he would have to put me on hold to find out this information, I told him to forget it as I had wasted hours of my time and the phone calls were costing a lot of money.

I got an email from the original staff member at the Customer Relations Dept in Virgin Holidays who said  she see's on the notes on my account that I'd been told I'd loose 50% of the holiday cost if we cancelled (we were not told this as we told the agent we weren't being put on hold again) and she offered us the transfers and car hire previously offered plus an additional £50 each for my girlfriend and I as they didn't want us to cancel but if I want to accept this then I have to write to them to accept it and cannot email them as I have been previously doing, I have not made contact since as I think this is totally unacceptable.

The VIP experience manager at Universal Studios gave me the Operations manager's contact details and he confirmed no tour offers access of CSI and they have no control over how travel agents advertise. He also advised me has worked at Universal Studios Hollywood for 30 years and he has never had access to the CSI set. He sent me a copy of the daily call sheet (which the public don't normally get to see) which showed all the productions for that day, which included CSI. On this sheet it states very clearly that there's strictly no access available to the set of CSI unless the shows producers ha
